LECTURER IN PLANT PHYSIO-ECOLOGY

Duration
- An initial appointment is for three academic years, but guarantees
the possibility to continue as a permanent professorial position (Senior
Lecturer / Professor).
Position description
- We are inviting applications of outstanding scientists for a
full-time position of a plant scientist, experienced in a plant
physiological approach to understand the plant functioning in its
environment. Applicants are expected to develop a high-impact research
programme, for which he/she has full autonomy, and to participate in
undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral education and training. The
candidate is capable of leading research projects and, of course,
within the framework of the Department of Biology, to accept
promotorship of Ph.D. and M.Sc. research projects. We expect the
candidate to show some experience in the guidance of research
activities that lead to graduation works of M.Sc., and doctoral theses
in the related research area. The infrastructure and facilities of the
Biology Department will be available.
Research
- The candidate should have a broad, interdisciplinary view on the
field of Functional Plant Science with a research profile, aiming at
ecological upscaling of plant function to address vegetation or
ecosystem scale processes. Elements relevant to adaptation of plants
to global change from a physiological point of view are welcome.
Research related to mangroves and adjacent marine (aquatic) ecosystems
(wetlands, seagrass beds and coral reefs) facilitates the development
of an interface with ongoing VUB research (within the Department of
Biology and other departments). Applicants should have a strong
research record and are expected to be involved in national and
international networks. He/she has the capability of defining
strategies and providing leadership for innovation. The successful
candidate will be encouraged to interact with various departments.
Teaching
- The successful candidate will participate in a number of specialized
undergraduate courses at Master level based on his/her research
expertise, more precisely in International Course Programmes (M.Sc. in
Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management, M.Sc. in Biology
(including the International Course Programme Human Ecology). He/she
will also be responsible for courses in biology at the Bachelor
programme level. Every first appointment is dependent upon the
successful delivery of a teaching session.
Requirements
- A completed Ph.D. in a relevant field is required and substantial
international postdoctoral experience is preferred. He/she has the
capacity to define strategies and assure renewing scientific
leadership. The candidate has excellent teaching skills and is able to
motivate students. The candidate has excellent knowledge of English
and Dutch, or a willingness to learn Dutch. Female candidates are
